The Office of Department of Kansas Chaplain:

Chaplains, by virtue of the office, are called to express, by word and action, our founding principle of service to God and Country.  You are encouraged to celebrate diversity among people, cultures & faiths and to provide spiritual and emotional guidance when needed or requested, always lending dignity and respect to the occasion.

As a Chaplin for the American Legion Auxiliary, you must remember not to offend anyone as we do not promote any one religion.  Chaplains reach out, not only to the American Legion Family, but also to all those with needs in their communities, states, and nation.  Chaplains at the unit, department, and national levels serve alongside their fellow members and are called upon to pray at gatherings and to lead services such as memorials for our fallen soldiers and deceased members. They energize the hearts of Auxiliary members and foster selflessness as they serve veterans, the military and their families.

Your objectives as a Chaplain should be: (1) to pray for our members and leaders that they will do the job being asked of them this coming year; (2) to guide members through prayers that are appropriate for the situation; and (3) to act as the spiritual ambassador of the organization.
Through various means of communication, the Chaplain should:

  1. Provide and promote the emotional and spiritual support needed for the Legion Family through e-mails, cards, and prayers.
  2. Educate members on the diversity of all faiths and cultures.
  3. Reconnect with the master of might and promote our founding fathers’ desire to create one nation under God.
  4. Be responsible for all invocations, benedictions and memorial services for deceased members at official meetings.
  5. Recommend educational materials that promote a spirit of unity and love.
  6. Provide fellowship and spiritual events to help the Unit/District/Department grow spiritually.

Department of Kansas Chaplain's Program:

The 2018-2019 adminstrative year is off to a great start. Watch for informtion for the Chaplain's program from a wide variety of sources: Sunflowerette newsletter, Facebook page, Chaplain's visit to your district and/or unit, and at department meetings.

There will be a "Favorite Prayer Contest" held at Mid-Winter Forum. Any member can submit their favorite prayer or a prayer that they wrote in this contest. The winning prayer will be the featured prayer in the 2018-2019 Department of Kansas Prayer Book, and be the opening prayer for 2019 Department Convention. Submit your prayers to the Department Chaplain by e-mail or bring them with you to Mid-Winter Forum. Now for how the prayers will be judged, the Department Chaplain is asking members to bring their spare change to Mid-Winter Forum. Containers will be placed by each prayer entered into the contest. Members will be asked to put their spare change in the contain by their favorite prayer. Which ever container that has the most money, will win the contest. All monies donated go to District 9 for any items they need in organizing the new district. Please contact the Department Chaplain, if you have any questions.

Please send your unit and/or district prayer for the Department President's prayer book to Department Chaplain, Annette Scheaffer, 1916 Prairie Lane, Augusta, KS 67010, or by e-mail:ams.ksala@gmail.com on or before April 15, 2019.

There will be a Prayer book contest at 2019 Department Convention. Please view the various resources below to help you in this competition. Please contact the Department Chaplain, if you have any questions.
